What rig do you go with when fishing low, clear, cold water for winter steelhead? Long light leaders? Clear floats? small hooks?

Well last year during March and April I was using 6 pound test, size 2-4 hook (in red) and roe or size 2 colorados. Right now Im using 8 pound test, size 2 hook and roe with the occasional jig tipped prawn.

A single egg fly or jensen egg is a good start

To easy to spook fish in low clear water so the softer and smaller the presentation the better... stay out of view and don't forget to watch your shadows.

Two guys out fishing on the ocean, one lands a fish.

Suddenly the fish speaks, ''If you release me, you can have any wish you want.''

The guy throws the fish back into the water and wishes the whole sea would change into the finest beer there is. By golly, this happens, the sea turns into beer.

Astonished, his mate replies, ''you stupid ***, now we have to pee in the boat''

Low clear water, I go to long leaders ( 30 inch minimum ) and high contrast rigs such as purple jensen eggs with white wool or small black corkies with white wool. If you like to fish worms, go to smaller presentations and natural colours.

It Is a good opportunity to fish tailouts and bubble covers.

Great time to break out either the Spey rod or the single hand fly rod for tailouts.
