Sorry I do not have first hand knowlege, about Thrasher, Mainlander. I did call a guy who said he was going there on July 18th (sat). He said it was spotty but managed a couple of low teens. I sorry I can't help you on set-up, times, weather ect. The guy is a bit of an ass, very tight lipped. Heaven forbid helping out another fisherman. I SAID IT WAS A GUY I KNOW, NOT A FRIEND.
Anybody been to Port Alberni for Sockeye in the last few days?

The socks are concentrated further up the inlet between china creek and polly pt and down deeper. We brought home 8 yesterday with most caught at 75'.

Got up to Port Alberni on July 23, (thur). Got there at 8:00am. Didn't feel like dealing with the early madness at Cleutsi, put right in at 8:00am. Fished outside Stamp Narrows along the log booms. Flat calm conditions. Probably 25 other boats in the area, most of which were catching fish. Talked to a couple boats who said the morning bite was starting to slow down. My partner and I still managed to get 4 into the boat by 10:30am when we headed back in. Pulled the boat out with no wait. Not a bad outing 4 fish in three hours boat launch to boat lanch. Talked a local who told that it had slowed down in the last week both with boats and fish caught. He felt it was not going to last much longer. He also said that the socks in the Canal have been there awhile and that their mouths were starting to soften, thus shaking the hook easier? I never have heard of this before. Anybody have any input on this? We boated all 4 with no problems. The fish, though smaller than normal were clean and appeared in good shape. Nice morning, 4 fish in three hours dock to dock. Trolling speed- dead slow, around .5mph Depth- We ran anywhere from 65 to 85 feet. I really don't think it mattered. I turned the fish alarm, on the sounder off as the steady beeps were anoying. Gear- 1st rod 11inch tri colour Hot Spot flasher 18ft off the mainline with a bubble gum squirt on 24 inches of leader. 2nd rod 11inch Hot Spot green flasher 16 feet off mainline with an red squirt on 28 inches of leader. Both rods produced the same. I really don't think the set-up was all that important. I am sure you could run any leader lenghts, within reason.

Got out to the Fingers this morning, Wed. July 29. Fished daybreak till 800am. Not even a sniff. Tried Coyotes, Glo-Green, Watermelon and Cop-Car. Hootchies UV-Prawn and Green Spackleback. I did see a few larger fish on the sounder at 165ft. in 250ft of water. Worth having another look at tomorrow. Forgot bring some herring strip. Might try that tomorrow if I can get out.

COOL!!!!! Was out last night, Aug.1. Trolled from Neck Point to Clark Rock. At 800pm we were overtook by a pod of Killer Whales!!! They headed to the Fingers and hung around there for quite a while. Quite a few boats out, everyone got a hell of a show. The hooting and hollering was just crazy. You almost would think everyone had fish on! Of which we didn't even get a sniff. Even so it was still a memorable evening.

[: Lately the fish have been 120ft.to 160ft. off the Fingers. The wife got a 24 pound screamer last night at 7:00pm Aug3 her first of the year. Nice clean spring. North side of outer Finger. Green Glo Coyote at 130ft. in 300ft. of water. It has been pretty spotty around the Fingers first fish I seen lately. Clark Rock and Neck Point have not been much better. From what I hear Whalebone to the Grande has been a little better. Guys are saying 150ft is ticket. I don't know about Thasher but I usually fish it around 100ft. Killers Whales were around the Fingers again last night around 800pm. Hope this helps River Walker.

Was out off Nanaimo Aug.9 am. Fished the Fingers from 6:00am to 7:00am, tried the usual gear and fished 120-160 ft. Lots of juvi fish and Pacific cod. A few promising signs Snake Island side of outer Finger. Hard to get the gear in front of them without picking up a shaker. Moved over to Clark Rock and trolled towards Neck point. Saw good sign at 140ft in 200ft of water. Tried everything I had on board. Got a good ''hit'' at 9:30 am, right in front of Neck Pt. Other than that nothing else for the rest of the morning. The ''hit'' was at 135ft, #5 watermelon coyote, 55 inches behind a UV HotSpot, 16ft off of the mainline.

Last weekend we fished pretty hard for one 14lb fish off thrasher. Caught it on a green/glow 4.0 coyote at 120 feet. We released a lot of little shakers though which I guess is a good sign for next year.

Fished the hell out of Clark Rock, Neck Point, the Brickyard and Fingers this morning Aug12. Not a sniff. Talked another boat at Brechin Pt. ramp said the same about the Grande. Hopefully things might pick-up with this cooler weather.

Went over to Port Alberni on Fri morning the 15th. Fished from China Creek to Stamp Narrows. Picked up a pair of mid twenties both along the the face just before Stamp Narrows, China Creek side of the inlet. A #6 Green Glo with no flasher, 15' of the mainline at 110' was the ticket on both fish. Both were caught trolling away from town. Seems I have better luck trolling away from town up there. Saw a few sockeye jumping, but the majority have hit the river. At Cleutes I talked to a local who had a 34 and a 40. Nice. He said that the springs really started to pick up in the last few days and thought it would be even better by mid next week.
A note on the hooks that now come with Coyotes. After I caught a 30 this year, I noticed the hook had started to straighten out. I now am in the habit of putting a better quality hook on, when I buy a Coyote. Maybe a good pratice for the big fish in the Canal.
