Nope. The only point in fishing the inlet now is for prawn and crab. The gillnetters cleaned up... then the purse seiners moved in and they finished her off. 170,000+ fish quota over the last week and until this friday. The Socks are officially done for at least two weeks if not the entire season. You may get one or two if you get lucky by Nahmint but it closes Aug 1st, after that you will have to go further out the inlet to have success but then you may as well go fish Barkley for Springs! and then again the DFO may open it up again to the Sieners if they find any significant amounts of fish through their test fishing boat. The lake quotas are filled, so the rest of the socks coming in are `surplus` and will be commercially fished out. The DFO allowed the Sporties and natives to get their quota before the Commies so its done for us now. Just in time for the Springs in Barkley though!

That's not true the fish are in thick just got back with 24. First day 12 in 1.5hrs and the next day 12 in 2.5 hours. We went up wed fished the night bite and thurs in the morning and back in vic by 2pm. going up sat. again. According to the DFO web site the comercial guy's can only fish from the marina to harbour quay so us sporties can have a go at it. It was great in between the marina and nahmint. Don't listen the steelheads post becuase it's not true. don't know if he was fishing or just reading.
THERE DOWN DEEP 70ft TO 110ft that's all I can say. Test it out for yourself's. Forgot to say ALL on spoon's Good luck!

Hey Gill,
Glad you had such great success! Sound like you know what your doing!
I only report when I fish. You have a point though, nobody should to listen to me anyhow. But this is my catch for Socks this week: Monday 3, Tues 0, Wed 0. I fished Scouts beach, China, Cous, Dunsmuir and Nahmint at 85 to 120ft. If I'm wrong and the Socks are thick then obviously I missed them. Which is weird because my boat has caught close to 80 socks this season... But a 170,000 peice opening over 2 weeks and 50+ gillnets and a dozen large purse seiners strung from Pocohontas to the harbour, I think says more than I can say about that. just my 2 cents...
The Nook anglers are fishing the mouth of the inlet ahead of the gillnetters, I talked to a few of them on Wednesday when I was geting gas at the Nook and they were catching two or three per boat in the morning bite. So I think that your best bet of catching the Socks are probably going to be downstream of the nets... west of Pocohontas, but then if you are going to go that far down the inlet, you might as well fish the springs in the sound!
I will be out there next week again, so if I am wrong and I slay them, I'll let you know. Peace.

I have still had good luck all week the only day I stayed on the dock was today Friday we have got the limit for 3 people on the boat each day . It has taken an extra hour or so over before thats all I have found different than before the big commercial slaughter. To be honest it was sometimes a downer having to come in so soon some days, so I have enjoyed the extra time on the water.
If anyone is thinking of cancelling their trips because of the net boats don't worry, it's still very fun out there. Hope you still can make it out.

Hello all,
Im new to this site, however, I read the forums here all the time. Great forums and with all the helpful info I managed to get some sockeye first trip to China Creek. I was there last Monday and Tuesday and was looking forward to going back this Sunday night but it seems there is a lot of areas closed starting Aug 1. I'd like to try to catch a few more sockeye and it seems that there's still quite a few around even after the commercial boats were out. Where would a guy go to fish in an area that will be open after Aug 1? Thanks a lot for all the help guys!

Welcome to the site Campion492. Im glad you found some helpful info here. I think most rec anglers are done with the sockeye in the inlet come August 1st so the reports are probably going to dry up a bit.If you get out there dont be afraid to fish deep (80 - 120ft) for them.

Hi guy's was out yesterday and this morning yesterday took a bit longer we started late at around 6am and of the water at 11 with our 12 and this morning it is red hot got 11 in about 3 hours and it took 1 hour to get the last one, must of had at least 10 on and kept on losing them then when I looked at the hook on the hot spoon[the deep rod] the hook was broken change it up and got the last one right away. All the fish are about 8 to 10+lbs 2 pounds bigger than last week. It is only closed from Nahmint bay to the ocean!!! just like every year they close it for the chinook's. Get out there the fish are big right now so it worth the trip. good luck!

I went out in the Canal twice this year, and I couldn't help but notice how rude some of the other boaters are. It's tight fishing as it is, then to have 20ft plus boats screaming and weaving in between other boaters, when there is the middle and china creek side practically boat free. Not cool.

Cheers

Thats great - getting worried as not as much chatter this year as last. As well, fish tactics has another thread going but it is not linked to Port Alberni - some guys are at least getting into schooled sockeye.
Regards

lee:-
Right now you only have to go as far as China Creek/Cous.
More rods and flashers the better.
Purple Haze flashers are good but you can use Green or Red Hotspots.
For dummies same colors.
There are about 45 different colors that will work for hoochies, spoons etc.
There is no ''magic'' hoochy color. Tons of stuff works, but as long as it's the smaller type hoochies or spoons.
Try bare black EagleClaw hooks tied one up,one down...3/Ought size, 27'' behind flasher, trolled slow. Keep the rotating Hotpsot flashers closer in to release clip.......about 8 feet. Run your dummies off or near the cannonball.
Run your rods at 20 and 35 feet to start. If it gets really bright and hot later in the a.m. you may have to go deeper. Could be anywhere up to 60 ft. on bottom rods.
Flasher colors:- Purple haze, Red or green Hotspots, Green metallic.
Hoochy colors:- reddish pink, bubblegum pink, green/red, blue/red, pearl white/pink, straight black, to name a few.
Spoons:- Coyote 3.5'':- run on leader from 27 to 42'.....Party Girl, Halloween,Nasty Boy, 57 Chevy (black/pink/white) to name a few.
Gibbs:- 2'' Gypsy----''Flaming Hans''.
Lure called ''Googly-Eyed Wild Thing''.....or any of the variations of this simple little lure.
Disregard the surface fish you see on the finder. (Anything shallower than 15 ft.)
Many people think sockeye are extremely difficult to catch and that you need some ''magic'' hot hoochy or rig or flasher.
Actually they will hit all sorts of stuff.
Trick is to be ''on'' the fish at the right depth with lots of flash and bling.
Flasher colors don't have to ''match'' nor do you have to use the same lure on every rod. Just make sure you're at the right depth with a party going on down there.
Troll slow to start.....try speeding up later if no hits.
We've gotten them going 2.3 mph sometimes.
If you are using the one-up/one down Black EagleClaw Hooks.....try using an orange or red tiny bead between the hooks.. or use a piece of that radiant reddish ''U/V'' tubing about 1/8th of an inch long between the hooks. This works too.
I use 25lb. test leader for Sox.
When you get a fish on, do not ''play'' it. Reel it in slowly but surely until you see your flasher come to the surface and then bring it in making sure you have some tension on the line at all times.
It pays to have one guy ready with the net and it pays to let him know which side of the boat you are bringing it in. Teamwork!!!
Bring it to the side of the boat and net it all in one action.
The longer you dilly-dally around, the greater the chance of losing it. Many fish are lost at the side of boats because of a net screw-up.
DON'T lift the fish out of the water with your hand on the line......a sure fire way to lose a sockeye.
Wear sunglasses.....quite frequently hooks will let go while you are reeling in and the flasher and lure will rocket back at you, striking you somewhere on the body. You don't want hooks taking your eye out.
Sockeye tend to wriggle like hell when they are at the boat so you've got to be quick on the netting.
Cheers.....
