First trip with the third rigger and 5 rods this morning and it was nuts!Had 2 8 year old girls and my dad with me.Fished Cous creek with the other 150 boats, landed 8 and lost well over 20. MP 15 with 27 inch leaders and green flashers were the ticket for us.

Back home for a few days off the Big Pond. Local reports suggest the sockeye fishery is roaring along right well. Four different rigs reporting in for the past 2 days - easy limits point blank (Cous / Dunsmuir & China) at first light for all. Good News!
Apparently the nets did slow things down, but only for 2 days, then it picked right up again. No further openings scheduled at this point.
Papermill was right rocking through the rains, and still going yesterday although slowing there now as the weather heats up.
Test boat suggests 90K sockeye between China and Holm, confirming they are starting to back up in the Inlet.
One of the Ladz has confirmed the ''night bite'' is still happening. Been out 2 evenings when the inflow allowed, and again, limits at close range.
Likely at or just over the peak of this run at this point. Suspect good fishing for another week and change on them. Just about the time they start to slow off, the springs should be rolling in.
Horrible place to have to live!
Tight Lines! Nog

Monster, do you plan on fishing the shore into the chuck or fishing from shore in the river?

I have been told that paper mill dam below is the only place that is open for fishing. If you know somewhere else I am open to suggestions.

Wouldn't be counting on Papermill being open this season. Due to the MANY problems there last year, DFO is very much apposed to seeing it open this year. They have called for a meeting with the SFAC here to discuss this issue. The SFAC is divided itself. Some see the fishery as a serious blight on sportfishing here and don't want it to happen again. Some others suggest there needs to be access for those without boats, and that a strong enforcement regime should address the problems. Tough to tell which side will carry the day...
If it is open, I would suggest sticking right strongly to the rules. otherwise it WILL be shut down again in very rapid order...
Cheers, Nog

hahah ya nog i heard there were some pretty crazy scraps going on down there. Im always away at that time up north fishing but i hear its a gong show.
but monster, fishing for sockeye is a fisherprice type of fishing. Its very easy. you just want to haul them in as fast as you can so the hook wont tear from their mouths.
just grab a float, a long leader and some wool. your just flossing the sockeye. They wont bite much.

Ok so it sounds like I need a rod reel line lead hook and a baseball bat. Maybe its not worth it.

dont get me wrong, its fun to do.. get your limit in an hour and go home. Not very many fisheries enables you to get so many fish with such ease as the sockeye run.

Well tomorrow is June 1st. Has anyone been doing any recon in the inlet? Any sizeable schools of fish holding or are they shooting up river with the cooler weather?

Well... We got skunked this morning. Didn't hear any action on the radio and the girl at the ramp said nobody brought in any to the cleaning station. I'll be back out next week when a little more fish show up. We saw a lot of fish on the sounder at Cous creek, no biters tho!

I didn't wander past china, but I would say 20+ boats near cous maybe that again around the corner. Less than what I expected. I would wait a week before hauling the boat over the hump, but who knows?! Maybe it was just a really bad day for all.

If it was the slow out there I'd wait 2 more weeks. The most important thing is the weather we need a warm spell and the river temp to rise before the socks start biting.

I got a couple in the river, got lucky I guess as the river was really high and nobody else got anything while I was there. Had some drama in the park with the natives/dfo/co... About where I parked my vehicle... I was asked politely to move it 50m's off native land. No problem!! Anyhow, I got them on pink goey bobs, both bit the hook. I used wool for an hour and nothing, reached into my bag grabbed a steelhead setup and figured why not...

It's raining a lot...and the water is cold. These fish are just shooting straight up into the river, not sticking around.
My guide buddy told me if it was him he'd head down to about Nahmint...and not bother with China Ck.area right now.
I've seen this before....the early 'skunk' on Sox......I'm not even putting a line down for Sox until July in the chuck.
