Dang
Oh well I will be out on Father's Day with my kids. They don't have any experience with downriggers or fishing for that matter. I expect to lose a lot of fish but should be fun

Too many nets in the river now, only 3 fish landed on the river tonight. Don't think I will be back until the netting is done.

Do not forget to report these guys just hot off the DFO web site ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DFO is currently in negotiations with both the Tseshaht and Hupacasath First Nations of Port Alberni to come to a mutually acceptable agreement around authorized commercial fish sales. However, at this point, an agreement for 2010 has not yet been signed.
First Nations food, social and ceremonial fishing has commenced in the Somass River and upper Alberni Inlet by both the Tseshaht and Hupacasath under a communal licence for food, social and ceremonial purposes only. In the absence of a signed agreement the sale of this fish is not authorized.
Under the Fisheries Act, the sale of fish harvested by First Nations for food, social and ceremonial purposes is strictly prohibited.
Buyers & Processors are reminded that all fish purchased must be from a confirmed commercial source or in the event of a future Economic Opportunities Fishery agreement an Aboriginal Fisheries Landing slip.
The public is also encouraged to contact a local DFO office or the ORR (observe, record, report) line at 1-800-465-4336 to report incidents of illegal sales of fish or any other fishing infractions.

The DFO drives by the signs advertising fish for sale on Compton rd, River rd,Beaver Creek rd, and highway 4 every day . I really don't think they are going to do anything about it. Just as they turn a blind eye to the nets accompanied by large halogen spot lights off of China Creek at from 9 pm to 4 am Sunday night.

OK here's a dumb question:
I thought all the 'food' fish were taken to the packers for processing? If thats illegal, then what do they do with the 1000's of fish they harvest?

I was in Port at a friends for the weekend, they were going through the phone book asking if you would like to buy fish from them. I am all in to catch fish for food, but to take advantage of the system.

Would LOVE to hear what a Fisheries Officer's reply to that call would be!
on the positive side, from all reports, sounds like a great year for Sockeye... will make the trip over from Courtenay, to catch my own , if they up the limit to 4 per...

ABOUT TIME going to 4 but not without kicking ~~~~,What up with them lettin the other sectors fish full quota's and try and hold us back ????
From Bob Cole
''Hello All, Today's Area 23 Harvest Committee meeting should have been easy with so many fish out there (see attached info). There are more Sockeye than most can remember. The escapement is well above what was expected on the predicted run size. Commercial fishers are catching their shares in record time. the First Nations have had great success and have more fish than they can sell without a sales agreement. Hopefully that happens soon and we don't have too much waste. Many in the recreational sector are catching their limits anywhere they drop a line. The test boat shows record numbers of fish inside and outside. But because, we the sports sector, volounteered, at the pre-season meeting, to start at 2 to show some restraint and let early fish up the river, DFO wanted to hold us to that offer until the reforecast, next week. With a seine opening now scheduled for this Sunday at 10 a.m. throughout the inlet, we (Jake Leyenaar, Paul Dore, Pete Milliken and I) demanded that our limit be raised to 4. Both First Nations and both commercial sectors supported our position. Stock assessment didn't. It took a lot of bickering but Bill Shaw and Paul Preston finally agreed and are processing the limit change to hopefully take effect this Saturday. There is no reason that the paperwork can't be done in time. They can close it on a days notice. Watch for a notice tomorrow and then watch for 6 to 10 seine boats up and down the inlet on Sunday morning, dropping nets and catching 28,000 Sockeye. I expect the run size to be upgraded at next Wednesday's meeting and the gill-netters and seiners will have another go at it after July 1st. Please note that if you catch a Sockeye with a freshly clipped adipose fin, it will have a little PIT sender in it's anus area. The creel surveyor or DFO office would appreciate the where and when caught info and the tag back to help track migration and habits to eventually improve our management tools. Off to check my blood pressure, Bob ''

Well thats really good news... I wonder what they will be raising the expected run sizes to? I bet in the end the run will be way more than 600,000. There are so many Socks in the inlet right now that we have actually snagged a few while trolling.
I saw a couple of sport boats beached when leaving the somass river... ?!?

The Latest
The Department has been working with the Area 23 Salmon Harvest Committee and the Port Alberni SFAC and it was agreed that:
Effective 00:01 hours June 26, 2010 that the daily quota for sockeye salmon be as follows:
- In portions of Area 23, Barkley Sound and Alberni Inlet will be four (4) sockeye.
- Tidal portions of the Somass River to Papermill Dam will continue to have a daily limit of two (2) per person in that portion of Subarea 23-1 from the tidal boundary at Paper Mill Dam on the Somass River downstream to a line from a fishing boundary sign at the Harbour Quay Marina at Port Alberni to a boundary sign on the opposite shore of Alberni Inlet. Note that this line runs just north of Hohm Island.
The Somass Sockeye in-season stock assessment program will operate as in previous years. This program collects escapement, test-fishing, catch and environmental information on a weekly basis. This information is used to prepare weekly in-season run-size reforecasts.
Anglers should be aware that the first in-season run-size reforecast will occur on Wednesday, June 30.

Lot's of Sockeye but with that lot's of boat traffic. China Creek is crazy with traffic. More boats on the water then cars on the street in Port and everyone is catching fish. The launch in Port Alberni is very busy arrive at 5 am and you will be waiting in line with everyone else. Spoke with lot's of people and it does not matter what they are using they are catching something.

Was out around China Creek area today....started fishing at about 6:20 a.m..
used nothing but tandem-tied black 3/0 hooks,Hotspot flashers (Red/gold, Green/gold/, Purple/gold.
5 of us on board...we all limited out (4 apiece), and lost a few too.
We were done by 8 a.m.
Everybody and his dog was out there fishing today......at least 150 boats but maybe more.
Very good fishing...and yet over the radio we were hearing guys say they hadn't caught a single one......but visually we could see lots of boats that were getting them.
Very good coloration on these fish....nice purply hues.
------------------------------------
For sale:- One pet Seal and 900 yards of rope with a harness........trained to catch Chinooks that are over 30lbs. only.

zipped out to Nahmint this moring at 5am, past all the boats at China Creek and there was maybe 3 boats there. I thought someone must know something I don't so I ran back to China Creek and dropped my lines there instead. hooked 16 with 8 of those in the boat.
By 10am someone said over the radio that a couple people just got a double header at Nahmint. Did it pick up there or is it dead for now?
Kids had a great time and they ended with a double header(8AM ish)!
