Summer is almost here again and I'm getting way too excited for this years trip out to Bamfield. Last year we did quite well at the inshore spots with coyote spoons and hoochies behind flashers. We pretty much fished the same gear offshore and caught nothing but coho, some small springs (did get one 29lber) ,and when we did get the gear down deep we hooked a couple chicken halis!
I've done some research and it looks like 6-7'' tomic plugs and ok'i titan spoons without a flasher seem to be the ticket for offshore. We might make it out to the big bank once if the weather is real nice but i like to go to the closer spots 10 miles out or less... Do people run mostly just big gear offshore to keep the cohos off? obviously this would work well when the bait out there is big but what to folks to when the bait is small? or is there usually just the big pilchards out there in August?
I'm interested to see what gear other folks use inshore vs offshore?

IronNoggin posted a spoon conversion last summer that makes the spoon look more like a Pilchard. It worked great. Here's that thread:

Big 6-7'' spoons and 6-7'' plugs. You cant go wrong with those, you just gotta find the fish.

So I am gearing to venture to the highway when I go to Nootka this summer, and all the talk of big spoons and plugs has me wondering if many of the old standards are now treated with UV, and if so, do they fish substantially better? If the answer is yes, does that UV blast work well? thanks. DAJ

Well there were big springs there, we did catch one one but using flashers we couldn't get our gear down without a coho pulling it off in 10 seconds or on the way down!!
Are the big plugs and spoons better for getting past the coho?

The bigger the lure, the more likely the chance of getting it down below the coho...the coho will still strike larger lures though. You can fish the spoons bare or with a flasher but the best option might be with a dummy flasher on the downrigger.
If the coho issue is just crazy, I'd switch to using 7'' tomic plugs (no flasher of course).

aYup:
Modified Coyote:
Same mods work very well on the large Wonder Spoons with the blue leading edge.
Don't forget the large plugs! And Yup, they often do keep all but the largest coho away (one that went 26 POUNDS last year is testimony to that!)
I'll be packin' lots of both!
Cheers, Nog

I found this picture of a Pilchard on the web which is interesting for comparison.
IronNoggins looks pretty good. Is it a size 6 or 7?

Here's a photo of some of Tomic's Pilchard spoons. I haven't tried any of these yet but I can attest that Nog's Pilchard conversion above works great.

Slabseeker20, where did you find these spoons? They arent on the tomic website and havent seen them in stores yet.

I use both, but prefer the larger sizes as the season progresses. Match The Hatch as it were...

One of my fishing buddies has been talking and emailing direct with Tomic because we're going to put together an order together. Here's what he told me in an email:
''I emailed Tomic and here’s what they have in the Pilchard Spoons – see attached picture. They said the ones that worked the best last year were the “Kelly”, “Mike” and the “Codfather” pilchard spoons. They are not special order and we can order them straight off the web page – just select “other” and use the comment section to specify which model you want.''
He also asked about plugs. These are two versions they have of the ''Mike Pilchard''. They look good to me!!
Here's their Codfather plug:

Wow, am I in trouble with the wife and it is because Slabseeker posted that picture of the Tomic Plug in Pilchard colors. I was looking at the spots on those plugs and it suddenly came to me where I had seen that pattern before. So I went over to my wifes art supplies and found a 12 inch clear plastic ruler with the holes already built into it. I heated up the ruler over the stove so it would take a bend and fitted it around one side of a test plug. A little black spray paint and I was on my way, I painted four plugs and they look great for a first attempt. But the wife was looking for her ruler and I got caught so I'm off to buy my honey a new ruler tommorrow instead of going fishing. And I get TO TRY OUT THE COUCH TONIGHT.
