Youtube Crab Snare Video

I called the DFO about the method of Crab Snaring and it is illegal, as the only method for fishing crab is by pot, dip net or by hand.

However, they may bring it to the sport fishing meeting where they discuss new types of fishing techniques that could be added to the regs.

I think it looks like a fun way to fish for crab. I would do it if it was legal. The DFO would be concerned on how the smaller fish or the females would be affected by the snare. It's legal in spots in the USA, I would be interested to know how they regulate it.

Snares are against the law but something like the the Crabhawk is OK and can be used with a rod 'n reel.

That crabhawk looks interesting... seems like a lot of gear to be casting though.

Harbor chandler in Nanaimo had a crab snare for sale once before. Unknowingly to them and to me at the time, it was illegal. But I purchased two of them, One is MIA and the other sits rotting on the floor of my boat. I must admit though when I used it before realizing it was illegal, any time you where at a dock not anchored or free floating the snares work excellent. Only issue is when the crab touches the air they let go of the trap and 50% of the time they fall back into the water.

Did you find that it damaged the crabs? pulled a leg off? Sounds like a fun way of crabbing, a little more active than just setting a trap.

it did no damage, they crawled onto the small bait cage and you could feel them though the line, so you just reel up. The actual snare part did very little, the crabs hang on themselves. once they hit air, they would let go but a fishing net below them caught them.
