I'm looking for some advice on what lure/bait flasher combos to try in the Bamfield area? I certainly wouldnt want you to reveal your secret lures however! Are flashers and anchovy on a 6' leader the way to go? Thank you.

Anchovies in teaser heads on a 6' leader will work just fine for you. Thats what I use, its pretty hard to go wrong with that setup.

4'' coyote spoons in bad attitude, nickel/green, nickle/blue, and cop car one 6' leaders work well too as do green/white hootchies on a 42'' leader.

Mack, Ive noticed that some years bait just seems to work a lot better. I primarily fish spoons out there but there have been days when they preferred anchovy, other days where we did just as well as any boat out there with coyote spoons. My recommendation is to fish one rod with anchovy and one with a spoon or hootchy and find out what they are liking. (6' leaders) The summer fish inshore are rarely deeper than 50 ft in my experience.

Mack, My two favorites and the only two combos I reallly use are: Green/Silver hotspot flasher with chartruese teaser head w/ anchovy w/ 6-7 ft leader @ 31 ft deep. My other rod is a Gold Betsy Flasher with a Gold/Silver/Purple teaser head w/ anchovy w/ 6-7 ft leader @ 44ft deep. I have been using these combos for years and have always had good succes at the wall, swale rock, harbours entrance, kirby point and Meares Bluff from June through September. If you have one side that is producing, it doesnt hurt to experiment. People will oftwn say that you dont need bait to catch fish, which in theory is true, but if you use bait it will often meen the difference between catching four fish to catching eight fish.

A flasher and anchovy at 25 to 50 ft will often be your most productive setup like swalerock said.
Hootchies, spoons, and plugs all have their times too.
If you find large masses of boiling bait on the surface, jigging and mooching can be very productive too...but dont waste your time with this method unless you see the perfect opportunity.

Sometimes in the summer when bait is slow, a plain white hootchy or a blue and silver coyote has caught me a few fish

For me last year a green army truck hoochie 42'' behind a UV green flasher and a 6'' cop car coyote 5' behind the same flasher were top producers. The bad attitude coyote spoon also worked real good. Like Slabmaster i'm going to try running false flashers off the downrigger ball this year.

The dummy flashers are just a way of attracting fish without having the drag of a flasher on your line when fighting a fish. Its more about your own enjoyment rather than fish catching ability.

I'm heading out to bamfield as well in mid august. We've got a small boat rented, but it may not have downriggers (supposed to be mounted by now, but you never know). If you are only fishing 30-60 feet down, would some big sinkers work for trolling, or would mooching herring be a better option. We will be staying inshore and I'm about to go on a shopping spree for tackle soon. This has been a great thread for specific tactics in bamfield, so thanks a lot.

deepc, Welcome the forum! Glad you joined us.
I'd try everything in your power to at least mount a couple manual downriggers on that boat. It will make a huge difference. Some years the fish are running 25-45 feet in barkley and other years (like last year for example), we hit most of our fish between 65 and 100. A inline sinker isnt going to cut it and if you are fishing in amongst a bunch of boats, could lead to tangles and tempers flaring.
Not a lot of people mooch live herring in barkley but you could try slow trolling a cut plug in tight to the kelp or rocks. Another option is to bring some drift jigs like perkins, stingsildas, mac deeps, zzingers etc in the 3 - 5 inch sizes (50-90gram) and drift jig for salmon in some fishy looks spots tight to kelp beds or go around hunting for bait balls away from the main trolling tacks if its busy...
How big is your boat and how far do you plan on taking it to get to the fishing spots...are you just planning on fishing the wall right infront of grappler inlet?

Thanks cory We will be going out in a 15ft with a 15hp for one day just taking it easy. not much boat, but it was all they had left. We have a friend who runs a charter and he is bringing his boat from Alberni for a few days and we will get one full day with him if it works out. So it works out to two days of fishing, one with an experienced guide on a nice boat, and another on a small boat with my partner and whatever knowledge I can gather until then. I've got a copy of ''island salmon fisherman'', a newer book on the subject, and I've been surfing these forums for advice. A few sources have suggested the wall as a good starting point and I figured August 14-17 will be a good time for inshore action. If the weather is nice the 15 footer should be alright, but I know that is an unknown variable on the ocean. I've been sorting through gear all day and getting excited for some fishing, but I know there is a lot more to know than just what lures to use. So anything you can tell me will be a great help. I'll be calling the lodge in the morning to ask if the downriggers have been installed yet. I don't want to be messing anyones lines up when the bite is on!

deepc, with the 15/15hp boat, you wont want to venture too much further than the wall most likely. Drop the gear and troll east up the wall tight to the shoreline. Let us know how you make out.

Thanks again, I just found out there will be downriggers on the boat and that the fishing is picking up. There will also be a net;) because I've had too many fishing trips ruined by not having a net. Hope everyone is keeping their hooks sharp and catching lots of fish!

there have been lots of reference to depth of offering, but that can vary depending upon A) the release clip being right on the ball, B) the release clip located above the ball (rubber snubber or tuna cord), C) use of a release clip with a leader. I have seen guys hook their DR line rubber snubber that streches to 3', attached the 6' release leader above the snubber, which release leader when tensioned is much higher, means the offering is being trolled at maybe 7-8' above where you think you are. so...if somebody says 41', does that mean his clip is at 41' or his ball is at 41'??? Just something to keep in mind? DAJ

I say go cut plug herring, no flasher, if you have to do it, go dummy flashers. Starfish is HOT HOT
