I have some friends starting to scout the shorelines between nile and comox and they have yet to see anything substantial. Usually its last week of July, First week of August before they are showing in numbers enough to target.

Hit Campbell today for a few hours to wash some gear. Didn't see anything splashing, moving or biting. :( Maybe next weekend. :)

Ive heard there a some pinks staging off the beaches of the north island rivers now, particularly the cluxewe. Also there are some fish in the Campbell river but not in big numbers yet.

Boy this topic has really gone quiet! No one wandering out to wet feathers or is everyone keeping the topic on the down low?

I haven't hit it myself, but I have a buddy that's been to the Campbell 5 or 6 days of the last week, and sent me pics of 4 silver beauties every time.
Hit it up!
Oh, and the water's been high. Maybe bring waders.

Is it worth heading up from Nanaimo area in about a week with my kids if we've never fished it before. Last year we went up to Nile creek but, the fish were too far from shore and I didn't see a single one hooked, so it was a bit of a wasted trip fishing wise. Thanks.

If you do go, your kids will have a much better chance at catching a pink salmon in the river than off nile creek beach. Nile creek is a beach fishery and sometimes the schools of fish are beyond casting distance especially for kids. Its hit and miss.
The river will be very busy and might be hard to find a good fishing spot. Most of the people that fish it for pinks grow roots in one spot and stake claim to it for the day. Just keep that in mind if you go but rest assured there will be plenty of pinks and your kids will be able to see them and cast to them.

Thanks Cory, that's very useful information.

going to be hitting the north island for some pinks, leaving sunday... coming back when i have had enough
what i have found fishing for pinks is you cant commit to one location. i stop at nile, and if its unfishable, i stop at comox, watch, leave, move on, and i usually end at Campbell. every hour is different so you have to be persistent and patient.
i would say the river is better for kids, however its a tad more dangerous.. not sure how young your kids are....
cheers

Was at CR on Sunday fishing under the logging rd bridge, fishing was hot with lots of leafless hooked fishing coming in. Today was dead slow, my gf didnt hook into any and I hooked into about 6 only keeping the biggest ones. That said the pinks are real small this year.
Lots of poachers, as always. It's hard to not lose my cool on them!
