The Cowichan is blown out. And if this weather keeps up some people's houses may be under water. Clairity is horrible lots of Salmon in the system but shore access is tough im down at the river daily and fish it daily as I live in Cowichan Lake. Little beach (greendale rd) where the steps are for access well the uper step is under water. I will post some pics of river in the next day or so.

Took a drive by the river on opening day. It was up to 3 meters and mushroom soup colored. No bank access due to height and the amount of big lumber would preclude even the greatest fool from trying to run a drift boat much less a pontoon boat.
Ah winter fishing on the west coast, ain't it grand. In spite of my whineing, I'll be back at it next week!

Not quite winter fishing my friend, fall fishing is usually the wettest. We just have to wait until mid december for some cold dry spells, that will get the river levels down and winter season in full effect.

hello all, first post here, dont know why i haven't seen this site sooner, great tips so far.i am thinking of getting a guide to take me on the cow but shore fishing so i can learn some good spots as i am new to steelhead fishing,i've had lots of luck catching salmon in the puntledge and stamp river but being a still water fly-fisher from kamloops i cant seem to catch steelies,i've read all kinds of books on it and i am sure im close to doing it right i think i need to go with someone who knows what they're doing.anybody have someone they can recommend?i use a 10-6 rod and level wind and usually use spin and glos with wool or pink worm etc.once i think my problem may be reading fishy water.anything will help. thanks, sorry about the epic post!

dont waste your money on a guide for the cow right now...the steelies are in rough shape and arent in the river yet anyways. stamp is your best bet.....but tossing rigs out of a jet where the guide tells ya is nothing like walking the shore on your own.

Larry welcome to FishTactics. There is a cowichan river trail map that you can purchase at Island Outfitters. It will show you the major access points and names of the runs and pools. I kinda agree with what gopher said, dont look into getting a guided trip on the Cow until we have some reports of fish in the river. Usually January through March.
The steelhead situation on the island is pretty grim. Unless you know a bunch of wild remote streams on the west and north side of the island, your options are limited. The returns to east cost streams are very very low and most systems that had great runs of fish in the 80s are now closed.
The stamp river pumps out hatchery fish for anglers to enjoy and its your best bet at getting into your first steelhead. Now is a good time to get into a mix of both summer run and winter run fish. Beaver creek rd will give you some public access at the gun club and falls pool to get you started.
If you have specific questions about methods, feel free to create some new topics.

Hey Larry,
The steelhead situation is pretty rough in the Cow. A guide may get you into some fish on the Cow, but your chances of getting them walking in is pretty slim, even if you find a good spot. Make a trip to the Stamp, its really your only decent chance of getting a steelhead south of Campbell River. And ditch the spin and glows and move into jensen egg/wool patterns, steelhead jigs and even real bait.

Steelhead, Jensen egg's are considered Bait, so your not allowed to be using them, the spin and glows are working fantastic in this high dirty water, the rocket red ones particulary, the orange eggs from delta tackle work great, with a pinch of peach wool or white. Use these patterns in the lower clearer water, but I totally suggest using the spin 'n' glos and the lil corkies right now. I just caught my biggest steelhead of the season bottom bouncing a purple size 4 corkie.

Thank you Steeliecore for that debatable info on the Jensen eggs.
Quote from regs: ''Bait” is any foodstuff or natural substance used to attract fish, other than wood, cotton, wool, hair, fur or feathers. It does not include fin fish, other than roe. It includes roe, worms and other edible substances, as well as scents and flavourings containing natural substances or nutrients.
It's up to you to decide if the anise oil on the jensen eggs is a natural bait or not, and if you wash the eggs removes said oil.
Although, you can use jensen eggs, jigs, and bait in the Stamp.
I only use spin 'n glows as a last ditch before I move downstream. Same with pink worms.
I've been making my own jig, its a 2/0 hook, with lead jig eyes, and then purple and black maribou. Its pretty well all I have been using, because it works for me. Cory the site admin put me onto the jigs, and he's right, they rock.

Steelhead, The black/purple combo is a winner. If you are able to tie the pattern on a jig hook it will be even deadlier. The jig will glide horiztonally through the run with the hook point up! This give better hook sets and wont snag bottom if your float to jig distance is set a bit too long.
I started making them with a brass bead secured with pin and thread infront of the hook eye instead of buying plain painted jig heads (often poor quality). This gives them balance.
Here is a great tutorial created by a guide on the lower mainland.
