Hi folks, new to sight and look forward to meeting other members.I moved from toronto to campbell river bc in 1974. My first salmon experience was on the goverment wharf and hit and scraped with my first spring . After what seamed to be a lengthy battle i was the proud owner of a 23 lb salmon. That was it i was hooked.I spent all mt free time during salmon season fishin off the shores of cr.By the time i was 15 i was guiding for dolphins resort.I moved from that resort to the famous painters lodge where i guided for 13 years. Most of my life has been deadicated to the sport of fishing and hunting ,it's most likly i will be laid to rest with a set of deer horns and the skeleton of a fine trout or salmon.look forward to some fish talk and meeting the members of the club, thanks tight lines!

Am not totally new but have been away the past year, and just getting back to fishing. Now that I am unemployed from BC Gov I have more time for this sort of thing, including weekday go-outs - whodathunkit! Anyway I am 54, married, living in Duncan and more-or-less geared for fly or casting. I have a sailboat in Cowichan Bay for prawning, crabbing, jigging and occasional salmon fishing. Would be glad to take anyone out. Just email me rearly@telus.net Also very open to invitations to go wading, or drifting down river. And fishing tips are most welcomed. Reed

Greetings from lower south island New Zealand

I am a keen fisherman and hunter of most things.

I fish for King salmon on Dunedin Harbour and in the east coast south island rivers. I flyfish for trout, bottom fish for our local cod, hunt deer and shoot waterfowl. If funds allow I do a bit of light game fishing over the summer in the pacific

At the moment I m chasing Salmon in the evenings after work. Here are my catches from this week. I hope to pick your brains on salmon trolling techniques.

Our King Salmon don't grow as big as yours but they still taste great ugly bugger aren't I!

Steamer, Reed, and lurchernz - Welcome to FishTactics!

Steamer - I think you'll find the angling pressure on the rivers diminishes quite a bit in march for some reason but the fishing can still be great. Look into the upper regions of the rivers.

Reed - Too bad the salmon fishing is either poor or closed in saltwater around cowichan bay. But you do have some spots you could sail to north thrasher rk / porlier pass / tent island areas and then also off sidney for the occasional salmon. You also have a fantastic river in your backyard if you like trout/salmon/steelhead fishing in fresh water.

lurchernz - Wow I had no idea you had a chinook salmon fishery in NZ. You must start a new thread in the saltwater forum and tell us more!!!

Hi,

I live in Nanaimo and have been fishing since I was young. We lived near the St. Laurence and used to worm fish for perch, bass, and carp, and pike (rare). We didn't eat them though! Began fly fishing nearly 30 years ago, though it has been extremely sporadic due to work and life in general.

Moved to BC from Montreal in the early 80's and have been here most of that time, with some years spent overseas, but I always wind up back on the island (Vancouver Island that is). Recently spent 7 years in Korea where the trout fishing is really tough! I rarely managed to get out (maybe 6 times) and it took me 3 years just to get settled and finally find out enough about fishing there to do some, but only ever managed to catch one trout! A small Lenok, in a tiny stream. It was hard to find a fishing partner to share expenses. There are virtually no regulations there and Koreans love to fish. No size limit either, though some streams are supposedly protected at certain times of the year.

Because of work and lack of a vehicle, I wasn't able to explore as much as I wanted to.

The reality is that there is little or no enforcement there. This, combined with a lack of care for the environment and countless road projects as well as local attitudes towards ecology as well as flood problems in the rainy season make it a challenging place to fish. There is also extensive use of fish traps, nets, and occasionally ''battery fishing.'' (Yes. really)I witnessed the net fishing myself. Count your blessings!

Anyway, been back for nearly two years and have done a fair amount of fishing since then. I also made it back a few times in the summer over those years and fished some of the North island waters, which I wasn't as familiar with.

I find it odd but somewhat comforting that after all these years I still have a lot to learn.

A little mystery in an endeavour keeps one coming back - and it seems there is always more to learn.

I think that a concentrated period of fishing is really necessary in order to acquire more than basic knowledge - as well as fishing a river or set of rivers repeatedly at different times of the year over the course of many years.

For example, after many years of wanting to, I am finally about to learn how to tie flies. I also want to learn more about drifting a river - especially in a pontoon boat. I have recently begun reading more about stream side ecology.

I fished some streams in the East many years ago, and do enjoy remembering the more settled and ancient stream beds and often less turbulent waters. They were streams where stealth was a necessity, and the fish tended to lie under the banks much more so than out here. Sometimes, they were little streams you could practically hop across, running through lightly wooded forest with little or no sky above the water. Though it could be brushy getting there, the banks were often clearer and afforded easier access to the stream. It was often boulder hole fishing, which has it's charm...

I have a few fishing partners, though not occasionally I fish alone. I usually avoid the more crowded and popular rivers, though the Cowichan is an exception. It is such a great experience to fish that river, even when I don't catch much. I always see something, whether it is a beaver, or ducks, or deer....or bear!

I'll be writing a post on the thread about using pontoon boats on rivers soon, so I hope to see you there!

Looking forward to sharing the experience we all love...

Hi everyone, I am in Lantzville and fish with a kayak, I'm heading up to Campbell River for a couple of days fishing this week (July 31-Aug 1) will try around the Tyee pool and down at Shelter Point. Anyone got ideas for other places where the water isn't as fast?.
Did alot of trips last summer up to china creek this year thought I would try somewhere different.
Any input on fishing locations is appreciated.
