1836 SPRINGS and Counting
Latest data from Somass River Escapement Bulletin Observations to Sept 20, 2009
OBSERVATIONS: Stamp falls counting facility has been operational since Sept 3. During the past 5 days chinook adult numbers have ranged from 65 to 176. Coho adults have ranged from 1471 to 2071 and Sockeye adults have ranged from 723 to 1571.
Total escapement to Sept 20 is ~~~1,836 Chinook~~~~, 22,374 Coho and 184,139 Sockeye. Sockeye escapement to Sproat Lake is estimated at 144,742 adults up to Sept 8. No additional data is available at present.
Stamp Falls counting operation has been closed for short periods during equipment repairs but otherwise has been fully operational.
River flows are relatively low for this time of year. River temperature is still 16-17C.
The escapement goal is 33,000.
We AIN''T gonna see anywhere near that! :(
For the sake of our (and theirs) future, ENJOY the coho, but PLEASE release the springs!

I've done a lot of coho fishing in the river this fall, and the coho just keep coming in... its really great to see such a healthy run. To bad about the Springs... maybe the DFO will wise up, lets hope.
I got up to the upper river today, caught 3, released both Springs, and kept a really nice 10lb hatchery coho. On red wool.

I can attest to some great coho fishing although it is slowing down a bit. Springs are closed but you can now keep 4 coho/day.

I got into my first ''fall run'' steelhead yesterday morning. I say ''fall run'' because it was an absolute chromer! It took a blue/chrome spin n glo fished under a float. also hit several coho but most were getting pretty colored up.

I've never fished the Stamp before, somewhat new to the island. But have a friend with a Zodiak. Any tips on where to put in? Do you need much of a motor on the boat? Size? Any tips would be helpful, thanks.

If your going to float the river, I would suggest launching up at the fish hatchery. You can fish all the pocket water and runs all the way down past blackrock, then get out when you reach stamp river provincial park. The top half of the river is doing exceptional. I touched 15 coho three days ago, landed eight of them, nice fresh ones aswell. And the steelhead are just tacked up by the hatchery.

I went yesterday and fished the gun range...1 very small summer steelhead, 1 spring, and 3 coho. I would tend to agree that the best fishing will be above the falls now...montejesse there are motor restrictions on the stamp..cant remember what the HP limit is for everybody else but the guides are allowed to use sleds. fish the upper like steeliecore said and be damn sure you take out at the falls provincial park otherwise you and your boat will be goners!

Where abouts are they holding? In tight with the coho or in the tailouts?

Are there any suitable fly swinging areas on the stamp, I was hoping to get the spey rod out for some early steelhead action. I have never fished the stamp, so any tips or areas to have a go with the spey rod would be much appreciated, thanks.

For fly fishing, I always see guys at money's pool. They all spey fish there, I would suggest getting some really heavy sink tip because of the high water. You can fish all the way down from the ash confluence to the spot called blackrock with the spey rod. the entire stretched is filled with coho and steelhead. Go to gone fishing in port alberni and they will give you the directions to money's and blackrock. Email me if you have any more questions.

Also keep your eye open for the bedrock, as it's good to swing a fly through. it will be right in front of you while you wade down.
