I dont know the number but I would look for them in the upper river. I dont think the hatchery has trucked a bunch of the summers back down to the lower somass yet like they usually do every year.

Cant say I know the number but Ive encountered quite a few in the upper river. not so much in the lower below the falls but some nice chromers are arriving already Like cory mentioned, the hatchery usually trucks a bunch of surplus summers from the hatch back down to the somass for fisherman to enjoy but dont think they have done that this year.

Hey Reaper I would suggest the gun range stretch. You can actually walk from the gun range upstream to the falls pool (quite a trek though)! There are a few places where the trail dies a bit but possible.

When you park at the gun range make sure you check in at the little house and record your license plate.

Im not sure you'll find much in the way of steelies yet but worth a shot.

I took a look at the upper river on sunday and am glad I did. I landed 3 summer steelies on a jensen egg. I talked to a few jet boats going by and they were doing well too.

I found some more steel today and landed a huge cutthroat that must have dropped back down from the lake. We are talking 24 inches big!

I've taken a few cutts from the stamp and sproat that are big spawners from the lakes. The males have big kypes and are covered in spots. Ive mistaken them for boot summer run steelies at first until I got them close to shore. The member Steelheader on here has one of those cutties in his picture gallery.

Some others have asked but is anyone finding good numbers of steelhead below the falls yet? Most reports Ive seen are from jets pounding the upper.

My neighbor made a trip to port in search of summers last weekend but found the water was very high. He said he hit a small winter run near the gun club and a sour coho but not much else.

Word from murphy's say the hatchery is delivering 125 adult summer runs back down to the lower somass to re-run the gauntlet on december 1st. They also said the guides are finding a few fresh winter runs in the lower river.

Those summers they truck back down river always seem to bite like crazy if you can find them. They'll hit anything.
