It all depends, do you have a spey rod or do you have a basic set up? If you have a spey rod most of the spots gear anglers go to is fishable on the fly, Check out the falls, fish where the riffles are, there are lots of fish, not a lot of people standing there and little overhang, perfect for a spey cast.

Not to mention the water is going down fast, so you'll be able to wade out on the river and get some room to do some casting.

I heard from some friends that they are hitting the winters down at the gun range and in the bucket, which is a good place to go to get away from the crowds.
Here is a posted youtube video of the fishing:

Its a shame those steelies have to bounce around on the rocks before release.

Kromer - yeah I noticed that too and agree with you, it is a shame. Ive seen a CO give out a fish handling ticket for less.
I saw that happen many years ago fishing there and now choose not to fish that side of the falls for that sole reason. There is no good way to carefully land a steelhead there! There, the best way would be with a rubberized release net but most arent going to go fork out the dough for one of those!

Kromer/Cory - I totally agree.
Anyhow, today was a perfect day on the river, and I managed to hook into three, two immature steelheads, and nice size wild, all winters. The river has come down a bit more and is crystal clear.

Yesterday the river was a little high but alot clearer than last time up there. My tally for the day was 1 summer run, 1 winter, 1 old red coho, and 1 old beat up sockeye! I could not believe there was a sock still living let alone catching one. I was fishing below the falls.

We fished today, and it was a lot slower than it has been. Still managed to hook into a lot of fish. But it was hours of nothing then a burst of hits. The water has come down a little more, but is extremely clear.

Take mackenzie rd off beaver creek rd and follow it around and down to the river. You park in the gun club parking lot then take the trails up river. I heard rumour that the gun club might be charging for parking now? Can anyone confirm?

Kel: Head up to the bucket, its about 20 min walk upstream from the gun club. Make sure you get down to the bottom of the river, they seem to laying in there. Good luck!

I fished the gun club and store pool yesterday and only hit one fish. Not as good as I thought it might be but I did see guide boats get 3.

Yes I am very familiar with the river...just because thats the only way you think you can land them there.. does that make it acceptable? Give me a break. No fish should have to flip around and bash their head against rocks prior to release.
On another note I picked up a couple dime bright does about 8lbs below the bucket sunday afternoon.

Fishing the stamp and ran into a guy and learned a new trick for steelheads and it works. Use prawns for bait, coming from Ontario this new Port Alberni guy is learning some local secrets! But the fishing has been good. The water has cleared up some but I hear we have some rain in the forecast, good thing because anyone coming over the hump be aware we are getting some snow. Drive with care, now I have to shovel my walk!! This is the reason I relocated from Ontario!!!! LOL

I was on the river today, saw the CO's again, the fishing has cooled a little. Put some pics I took of the river today on my blog. Pretty clear, and low.
