easy to fish, it seems most people on the river now are fairly experienced giving respect to other anglers whom wish to fish the same area.

Just checked out the pictures. That is a great fish no matter where you are. Congrats to you on bringing it in. Now I'm going to stare at my computer and pout since I still have another 5.1 hours of work left.

It looks like a rosy cheeked winter run in the pic, not a summer. Just my opinion.

So I have done a little bit of research, and I can't find out how to determine between a summer and a winter other than when they enter the stream (either summer or winter). I have a friend emailing a biologist... i may have something definitive later on.

Yeah impossible to tell from looking at a fish and in the end it really doesnt matter much, a steelhead is a steelhead. Just usually what Ive found is the summer runs on the stamp at this time of the year will be pretty colored up after been in the river for months. Most will show a pretty prominent red stripe down the lateral line and an olive green color on the back. That fish still looks very silver despite rosy cheeks, likely in the river for less than a month. I'd put my money on it being a winter run. The stamp gets steelhead pretty much every month of the year so summer vs winter is kind of a grey area.

Thats exactly what the CO said, probably entered the river in late November. Interesting, I always thought that a summer and winter were very different. Im going to wait and see what this biologist says.

The only way you can tell really is sexual maturity. At this time of year even a silver summer run would most likely have a pretty loose skein or even singles, a silver winter run will have very small eggs and tight skeins. Winter runs mature alot faster than summer runs however as they are in the river maybe 4 months to a summer runs 6 or so (maybe more) months before they are going to spawn.

I have also heard that it is the summers that go further up inland rivers to spawn, while winters stay lower in the system.
SmokeyRiver - Is there a genetic difference between winters and summers?

She was pretty high again today and quite a few guys were on the river. I only fished for an hour and landed a smallish 4lb chromer on a black and pink marabou jig.

Fished the bucket down to the gun Club, Nothing going on for me in 4 hours of fishing. Stopped up at the falls before heading home, and talked to an older fellow that had been there all day and said he had seen 5 caught since 8 in the morning and it was around 2 in the afternoon. The water is pretty clear, Not sure of the levels as im new to the river. Gonna go try again on Thrus.
