Steelhead - I believe there is no genetic difference between summers and winters. They are all ''Oncorhynchus mykiss'' and just have different run times. Summers tend to be resident to farther inland rivers with big natural barriers (rapids, waterfalls, etc).
Summers migrate into the rivers early in the year and are NOT sexually mature, they get sexually mature in the rivers while they wait. Yes summers travel MUCH farther distances because they are able to travel at warmer times of the year, allowing them to get up waterfalls, etc.
When winter run fish migrate into rivers they ARE sexually mature right away and are just going in to spawn, not to stage and get ready to spawn. The only reason to know would really be when they entered the river unless you cut them open and see how mature their eggs/milt sacs are for their ''colour''. Like I said a chromer winter run might have bigger skeins than a coloured summer.

I fished all afternoon today after most of the weekend warriors had moved on!! I started at the rifle range and worked my way upstream losing a fish at the head of the rifle range run, and then landed a small chrome doe at the b. creek tail-out. Lost a summer fish just below the bucket and then decided to trek back to the truck and head to the moneys. I hadnt been on the upper for a while but it was a nice change of scenery..I landed 2 summers and a big big hooknosed cutty to end the day.

I tell people all the time that the gun range to the bucket holds a ton of fish! That goes to show the difference between a weekend warrior and an experienced fisherman. Good job Kromer.

Sorry monsterguy I dont take pics when fishing alone.
Not sure what the hell the last post is about but the rifle range area always holds some fish and is about the easiest stamp access I can think of...course its crowded on the weekends but not half as bad as the falls pool an absolute zoo.

I was out today, managed to pick-up a couple of small wild steelies, I set them free. The jets are working it pretty hard up there. The water is a really nice light green in there. Not a lot of pressure today.

Ya that sounds like a good day for your buddy River_Walker. Does anyone here ever do drifts of the upper river?

Left them all in the river today. Touched 1 in the 3 hours I spent there this morning. Had fun though, as always. Can't catch'em on the couch. LOTS of people. 20+ vehicles @ the bucket, 15 or so @ the falls pool. River is about foot higher then I'm used to seeing and dark green. Seen 3 fish on the beach today, with the 30 or so people that stretched from the gun club to above the bucket. Saw another half dozen at the falls pool between the 20 or so guys there. No more weekend fishing for me :)

It sure would be nice to have some rivers that produce reliable and stable runs of wild fish too...hatchery fish are one thing, but wild fish are a whole different thing...sigh...

I got an email from my buddy in Port who said the river looked like it was gonna blow out last night. Might be a few days before its fishable again.
