More snow coming down ...but ... the last few days have been decent if you know where the fish are. Most of the usual spots below the falls are holding a few fish (winters and summers) Talked to a guide I know and they are still hitting a bunch of summers above the falls. not sure how the hump is looking today but I have a hunch shes still a mess.

kromer I agree ...Fished the river on saturday and picked up 2 small summer runs in the gun range stretch. A jet boat whacked a hatch winter run right infront of me but fishing the other side of the river. There was lots of vehicles at the falls pool so didnt bother with it.

Hey guys, I'm going to try the Stamp, Wednesday... Not very familiar with the system... I know the gun club... Is there a lower section I should try? And how do I access it? Thanks

There are two other sections you should try, higher up if you are walking in. At the gun club walk upstream past beaver creek, and try that spot. Or go further up beaver creek rd to the falls pool, just look for a bunch of trucks parked on the side of the road, and walk in about 750m. I am fishing the Stamp tomorrow. I'm going to walk into the falls pool in the AM then drift the lower section in the afternoon.

Dont waste your time trying to find shore spots below the gun range. Not much access unless you know land owners. The gun range is usually as low down on the river as I fish. I like the section of river from the gun range to the falls (as do many others). The sproat river can also be good fishing...

How did you guys make out yesterday? I havent checked the water conditions for a couple days but with the rain and melt we've had it should be quite high I would imagine.

Ya I got out yesterday. The river actually looks really good, water clarity is ok, and the water line was at normal levels, not low like it was. So i would say its pretty good. I didn't catch anything. Played a couple. saw a bunch landed by other more highly skilled anglers. the guides were doing well in the sproat, and if you can get a boat over to the island by the falls pool and fish the runs from that side, I think you can do really well.

Always nice to hear everyone else catching fish!! Ha!! If I go into the falls pool and there's lots of guys fishing ,are there good spots down river ( hiking distance ) that can be productive? And do jigs still produce or is it just an expensive way to lose gear ?? Thanks any helps appreciated.. I'm gonna fish every day next week until I land one!!

Regarding the jigs...if you are losing them then you are not fishing right. You do not want your jigs bouncing bottom. Short float them 1 - 2 feet off bottom. Adjust your float to jig distance to be 3 feet in 4 feet of water for example because a jig will sink and drift directly underneath your float. There are still a lot of anglers that adjust their float to weight distance as the depth of the run they are fishing and that is incorrect when using jigs. Throw the old advice about having to bounce your lures off bottom in order to catch steelhead out the window. Float jigs 1 - 2' off bottom and you will be rewarded, trust me. Jigs are pretty much all I use for steelies nowadays.

No problem, hope that setup works for you and the pic I added explains it better.
3 more advantages to fishing jigs under floats:
1) Because there is tension directly from lure to float, anytime a fish grabs the jig, it is transmitted to the float immediately. Because you are drifitng up off bottom, your float wont go down as frequently but when it does, it must be a fish!!!
2)Your lure is weighted so it gets down into the zone almost immediately. Other setups like wool or corkies etc fished on a 2-3' leader can take as much as 20 feet of the start of your drift before getting down and into the zone properly depending on current speed and depth. Jigs sink and get down to the fish quickly.
3)Your weights will be higher in the water column than your jig...your jig will drift below them if you have set up everything right. In my opinion this spooks fish much less than a big pencil lead banging bottom next to your bait. On upstream casts its common for your float ,pencil lead or weight system to drift downstream first and pull your bait downstream. That means fish see your weight first.. then your bait. You can avoid this by holding back on your float slightly once your gear has passed downstream of your position. With a float and jig you dont have to worry about this scenario at all and you will start hooking more fish upstream of your position than ever before.

Thanks for all the help guys!!( I picked some up today ) Is there a place around Nanaimo to buy bulk lead jigs, but with quality hooks? Then I can just tie in some different color combos of Marabou, does that sound right?
