Big Spring Salmon now open in Sooke!

Fishing in Sooke has been GOOD, larger Spring Salmon have been showing up in greater numbers to where we had 4 big Springs get on the gear on Monday June 11th. More and more saltwater trollers have been reporting releasing big wild Springs at Possession Point,Trap Shack and Otter Point. DFO representitives dropped off notices today at EAGLE-EYE OUTFITTERS in Sooke stating that the regulations will remain the same as last year, 1 Spring or Chinook over 67cm, 1 under 67cm will be allowed beginning June 16th 2012. This is great news, guests and local fishers will have the opportunity to catch and keep a big Spring Salmon. Halibut in Sooke continues to be very consistant this year especially for ''chicken'' or smaller fish. Areas to the West of Otter Point have been most popular. Halibut have been taking fresh Herring,Mackeral, and Octipus on a spreader bar system with a strong tandem hook leader. Most serious Halibut fishers are anchoring thier boats in 80 to 180ft of water in spots that can be found on the Neah Bay Map available at EAGLE-EYE OUTFITTERS in Sooke. Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society has announced that thier Salmon Derby is on this year, and typically is fished on the first weekend in August, this year being the 4th and 5th. Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina has also announced that thier Vancouver Island Salmon Classic Derby is on this year, with huge cash prizes, get more information at www.sookeharbourmarina.ca

Fished with Kevin and Susan from the UK today, ran out to the spot for Halibut. Anchored up in 150ft of water and put fresh herring down on a spreader bar system, tide was flooding strong and as it slowed down we hit a small Halibut within about 45 minutes. Had some other bites that didn't hook up and a Rat fish. Around 3:30pm Susan landed another small Halibut.Tried some Salmon trolling at Sheringham for a couple of hours before a nice quick ride home in flat calm water. No bites

Fished with Blair and his son John from the Surrey area on the mainland, for Spring Salmon, at the Trap Shack. A later start got us trolling shortly after 7am , using anchovy in a glow/green Rhys Davies head and a solid chrome Oki anchovy head, trolled behind a red and a Silver Betsy flasher at 75 and 85ft. We landed 2 nice wild Spring Salmon around 10lbs and had 4 larger Salmon hit the gear, bringing 1 to the boat, which we released. Also lost another 10 or 12lb fish behind the boat, and landed a Rock Cod,we took for dinner. Near the end of the trip Orca and Humpback whales came through the area, putting on a great show. Clear sunny morning with no wind, great trip.
