Great Spring and Coho Salmon fishing in Sooke now.
Sooke Salmon Fishing has been VERY GOOD this season, especially since mid June, Spring (Chinook) and Coho Salmon are around in GOOD numbers now. Possession Point and Otter Point are the most popular spots with many trollers heading farther West to Sheringham Point (light house). A very decent summer run of Coho has been in the area since July 1st, and of coarse many anglers are running some Coho gear higher in the water to try for the 2 hatchery Coho Salmon limit per person. Many different lures are working for the Coho Salmon, favorites include; Silver Horde-Aces High Fly purple and green spatter back patterns, any small pink or redish hootchy or squirt, the Coho Killer from Silver Horde, and of coarse anchovy trolled in any colour of bait head. Springs or Chinook have become a little more difficult to track down since the Coho have moved in, but persistently trolling bait deeper than the Coho lures will pay off with larger Chinook right now. Halibut fishing has slowed down as the Mud Sharks or Spiny Dog Fish have moved in, and many anglers focus has switched to the great Salmon fishing. The Halibut are still there, but less reports are coming in. Fishing Derby updates include that the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Derby tickets are on sale now at EAGLE-EYE OUTFITTERS in Sooke, and that The Vancouver Island Salmon Classic is almost sold out. This is the big cash prize derby out of Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina, where you enter a team of up to 4 persons on 1 boat for an entry fee of $6000.00 for thousands in cash prizes! There is still some room left, if you would like to spent a weekend in a luxury resort fishing for large cash prizes, contact the resort. Good Fishing, Ron.

Fished with a crew from the Seattle area, came in on the Clipper. Trolled for Salmon in the Trap Shack with Matt,Steve and Ben who were part of Steve's bachelor party, from 12 noon to 4pm. Had the gear at 70 and 80ft,using a Silver Betsy and a mirror red flasher with a solid chrome Oki and a red and chrome Rhys Davis anchovy head. Had 2 great Salmon hit the gear and come to the boat, we avoided netting them as it was obvious that they were wild and way over the ''slot limit''. Tailed them and took some good photos for Steve's party, biggest fish he's ever caught

Morning salmon fishing in the Trap Shack with Dan,Sue,Terry and Dorothy also renting a vacation home in Sooke. Had 1 small Salmon at the Trailer Park. Picked up and ran to the Trap Shack and landed a 7lb Spring Salmon on the first pass. Dorothy got a large Spring on soon after, but it didn't come to the boat. Terry then landed a nice 20lb Spring of the reef at 80ft on the downrigger. We also landed a nice Rock Cod off O'Brien late in the trip. Terry had another big Spring hit the gear that broke the hook off soon after getting on the gear.Fishing at 70 and 80 on the downriggers, our red and chrome Rhys Davis head had most of the action on Springs

We were running the anchovies at 70 and 80ft on the downriggers with one green and one red flasher and red and chrome and a solid chrome anchovy heads.

Fished with Shawn,Marc, and Nathan for Spring Salmon at Otter Point. Sunny windy day, Springs were biting all day long. Had strikes from early morning, landed 8 Springs in total, 18,14,14,13,10,9,6,and5lbs. lost at least 6 large Springs. Had Orca whales feeding on Salmon about a mile off shore about 2 hours into our trip, but this didn't slow the action down. Shawn had a huge strike off Otter Point that we thought was a Halibut as it was super heavy, but didn't run, it spat the hook before we could get a look. We were running the gear at 70 and 60ft for most of the day, staying in 80 to 100ft of water, from Gordons beach to the Trailer Park. We were trolling a chrome Oki anchovy head behind a Silver Betsy flasher and a chrome and red Rhys Davies anchovy head behind a mirror red flasher

Fished with my good friend Henry early morning at Otter Point. Bite started as soon as we arrived with 3 fish on right away, of which we landed 1 around 8lbs. Landed 2 more Spring Salmon in the 15 and 7 lb range as the morning progressed. Whales came through which did slow the fishing down, we caught our last 2 Salmon trolling the gear at 100ft to find them. Flat sunny day

June 28, 2012 Morning Charter with Ron
Fished with David and Dorothy from Montreal for Spring Salmon at Otter Point. Dorothy was on the rod first on the East side of Otter Point landing her first Spring Salmon. We trolled around the rest of the morning picking up Salmon every hour or so. Had a great double header around 11am,of which we landed 1,the Spring that got away on Dave looked to be around 25lbs.Left the area with a 17,15,10,and 7 lb Spring Salmon. Great flat morning with good action.

July 01, 2012 with Ron
Fished with Herb,Tom Sr. and Jr.,and Stephane again for Springs at Otter Point. The incoming rushing tide at noon proved very productive, landing 3 nice Spring Salmon 10,15,and 27lbs. We were trolling a red and chrome Rhys Davis anchovy head and a solid chrome head behind a Silver Betsy and red mirror flashers at 60 and 70ft on the downriggers. When the flooding tide started really rushing fast in the tide at Otter Point we put the bow towards Sherringham Point and held the boat in place in the tide, anywhere from 90 to 200ft of water, and the Springs hit like frieght trains! I always make the anchovies roll super tight in these conditions.

July 08, 2012 Morning Charter with Ron
Fished with the same crew as Yesterday in the same area. Ran bait on both rods today looking for a large Spring Salmon to excite the ladies. Had alot of Coho Salmon hit the Spring gear, some getting off and the rest wild fish that are not open yet. More sun today, and more wind, which really came up in the afternoon. July 09, 2012 Morning Charter with Ron
Fished with Andy and Julie from the Ottawa area for Spring Salmon West of Otter Point. Windy forecast for the day kept most trollers off the water. Started at the Trailer Park and trolled West, Andy hit a nice 16lb spring at 65ft on the downrigger trolling just West of Otter Point. We were using a solid chrome Oki anchovy head trolled behind a Silver Betsy flasher in 80 ft of water. When I went to clear the gear on the other side of the boat another big Spring grabbed on but shook off right away. Had at least half a dozen Coho bites that didn't stick. Gray high fog kept the temperature down, but the wind forecast was not as bad as predicted, water was very decent for fishing. Andy landed 1 hatchery Coho after many strikes that got away
