Chinook and Coho Fishing a Little Off

The last week the salmon fishing in Barkley Sound has been up and down. There have been some good days in various locations and other days over the past while have been very mediocre or even slow. The water temperature has really warmed up due to a warm water current and many areas of the sound have filled with Mackeral. We have had some good sized Robertson Creek fish landed at Swale Rock, Diplock,Vernon Bay, and Meares Bluff. Over the weekend the largest fish were 31 and 30 pounds which were in 90 feet of water and landed using a cop car and green nickel four inch coyote spoons. Meares had some decent fishing on Friday and Saturday of the long weekend with Chinook Salmon up to 25 pounds and Coho up to 9 pounds. The Salmon were only interested in bait behind a green and clear Rhys Davis Teaser Head and green glow hotspot flasher out closer to the surf line. On the whole the salmon fishing in one word during the early part of the August long weekend would have to be described as slow. This however can often be true during this time of the year. Often we are waiting for local fish to begin to return in bigger numbers and also waiting for what might be termed the late summer migratory flow for fish returning to watersheds to the south.
