It is the first weekend of March and the Sproat Loggers Derby will take place on March 3rd and 4th which is this weekend. Many boats have been coming into Port Alberni over the last couple of days as many hearty anglers are anxious to take part in the areas first Salmon fishing derby of 2018. Poett Nook is once again the derby headquarters. All salmon will be weighed in at the very familiar marina and camping area. There are many wonderful prizes for everyone. It is not to late to pick up an entry. The weekend weather actually looks almost perfect. Sunny skies and warm afternoon temperatures are forecast. Likely many will be seen in short shirts with the warm afternoon sun beating down. Out of Poett Nook the Sarita Bay, Bamfield Wall, Scotch Bay, The Whistle Buoy, Kirby Point up to Edward King, and Sanford will be very popular and close areas to fish. Anchovy in various teaser heads will be a sure bet for those feeder Chinook. Chartreuse, Green haze, purple haze and glow army truck should be great colors. Where one finds bait is where the Winter Chinook should be swimming and feeding heavily especially on tide changes. If there are a lot of undersize Chinook in the are where you may be fishing then a variety of three and three and a half inch or even four inch spoons should work. Popular spoons are cookies and cream, Irish Cream, cop car glow, and even an old nasty boy. Fish relativiely deep depending where you are fishing. Trolling from one hundred to one hundred and fifty feet is not uncommon. It should be a great weekend. Good Luck to all the entrants.
