Sockeye Sport Fishing officially opened on the 1st of May in the Alberni Inlet. The retention is two Sockeye per day. Sockeye returns to the Somass River system are not actually official but five hundred to six hundred thousand pieces seems to be the number that is coming up. Sockeye for the sport angler need to school up. Any salmon that are returning early will be high in the water and due to the huge run off of snow in the local hills the early Sockeye will race into the river and move into either Sproat or Great Central Lake. Hopefully there will be some warm air conditions over the next few weeks which will create some snow melt and by mid June the water of the Somass River and Alberni Inlet will warm up. Sockeye usually begin to school when the river and inlet hit seventeen to eighteen degrees celsius. The Sockeye migration slows down somewhat and the salmon will sit out in deeper and cooler water waiting for rain or release of water to cool the system down. For now anglers are anticipating Father's Day weekend to get out on the Inlet water and participate in a wonderful sport fishery.
