The weather in areas of Barkley Sound over the past few weeks has been rather ideal for those fisher persons getting out on the water. Popular areas to fish at this time of year around Bamfield are the Whistle Buoy, Kirby Point, Sanford, Scotch Bay and the Bamfield Wall. There have been a few migratory salmon headed to the big watersheds to the south but for the most those anglers out on the water have landed feeder Chinook. The bait has been small. Success to date has been using small spoons in Cookies and Cream, Irish Cream, Knight Rider, and green nickel. Some anglers are using anchovy with cop car, purple haze, chartreuse and lime green teaser heads. There are undersize salmon and one can go through the bait very quickly. The best success has been fishing close to the bottom of the area one is fishing in. WE are expecting the sport fishing to pick up dramatically in May. The early summer run of fish headed south whould begin to show up in good numbers. The weather patterns are changing and getting out to some of the offshore areas will also become more available.
